Runnels debuted in the World Wrestling Federation at the Royal Rumble in 1996 as Marlena, a character modeled after Marlene Dietrich. World Wrestling Federation / World Wrestling Entertainment Marlena gimmick and managing Goldust (1996–1998) The York character was created over a lunch with Tony Schiavone, one of WCW's announcers. Runnels debuted in 1990 as Alexandra York, a laptop-carrying accountant who led an alliance known as the York Foundation, a group of wrestlers with finance-themed gimmicks. Booker Ole Anderson eventually asked her to become part of the roster as a manager. When the company was purchased by Ted Turner in 1988 and renamed World Championship Wrestling (WCW), she moved to Atlanta and continued doing make-up for some of the wrestlers. On the weekends, she did makeup for the wrestlers of Jim Crockett Promotions (JCP). Runnels was originally a make-up artist for CNN from 1985 to 1991, where she worked on Larry King's make-up.

Professional wrestling career NWA World Championship Wrestling (1988–1991) After leaving the wrestling business, Runnels became involved in philanthropic work. During her time with the WWF/E, she briefly held the Hardcore Championship, her only championship during her career. Subsequently, she had an on-screen rivalry with The Kat, managed The Radicalz stable, and worked as a host and interviewer including a number of titillating segments such as bra & panties, wet t-shirt contests, and lingerie matches. She also managed both Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian following the Terri Invitational Tournament in 1999. In 2022: Rhodes, who had been absent from the WWE for six years, was introduced as Seth "Freakin" Rollins' unexpected challenger. He then signed with All Elite Wrestling (AEW), where he became a significant player and one of the company's top stars. In 2016, Rhodes left WWE to pursue other opportunities in the wrestling world. Rhodes competed under the ring name Cody Rhodes. In 2006: Rhodes started his professional wrestling career as a developmental talent for WWE. Rhodes, a wrestler in his second generation, followed in his father's career path to achieve success on his own. Cody Rhodes, born as Cody Garrett Runnels, is a professional wrestler and actor from the United States.
